Don't Let Social Media Fool You – Everyone Is Going Through Something

Social media is powerful. It is an undeniable force in today's world. One single post can launch a worldwide movement.  Social media allows you to connect with other like-minded individuals from all over the world. You can learn from others, see how others are doing, be inspired by others and share your own stories. But social media does have its shortcomings, and one of those is it can often seem like everybody is living large/winning big - except you.

Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, you name it — we all know them and we see them all throughout our day. You are constantly bombarded with images of people you don't even know, who depict the life you so wish you had or even have. These people go through struggles just like you but ain’t no smiling picture gonna tell you that. Someone could have a million views, 500+ likes and still be broke. Nobody’s life is perfect all the time. We all go through life's hardships, failure, disappointment, heartbreaks and pain.

Social media only shows half of what is real. Don't be deceived by Instagram newsfeeds! No one has it all together. Yes, picture perfect moments do exist. But they exist amongst the real life chaotic moments - those ones that don't get captured or documented. As you interact with people through the tiny screen of your mobile phone, endeavor to take a closer look before you make up your mind that they are better than you. Everyone has their battles. Don’t get caught up in the lives of other people, don’t count their blessings. You’ll lose sight of your own blessings if you do.

Don't let social media fool you. There are people with only 10 likes but have plenty of friends, and people with 1000's of likes that are incredibly lonely, depressed, in fed up relationships and no real friends. There are couples that appear extremely happy on social media but behind those photos they are both miserable and in dysfunctional relationships. There are couples who post next to nothing about their personal lives on social media but are in an extremely beautiful loving relationship. There are girls who expose their bodies yet feel the most insecure. Things aren't always what they appear to be. Social media has created an outlet for egotistical behavior, where self-worth is determined by the amount of likes received. But appearances are just appearances!

You don't know what some people go through to come out with glamorous pictures you envy. There are people squatting, some sleeping in their mother's back room with siblings, some sleeping on someone's couch but have got 100K followers and +800 likes on their pics. Some slay queens borrow clothes, hair and even phones to take pictures and post on social media. Guys are taking snap shots next to their friend’s cars. Guys flaunt lavish lifestyles yet are drowning in debt. Alot of Instagram superstars and Facebook famous people are struggling just like you if not worse, only difference is you have less followers and perhaps less pressure to keep up with appearances. It’s a jungle out there….but truth be told SWAG DON’T PAY THE BILLS.

“Fake people have image to maintain, real people just don't care” – Hikigaya Hachiman

The real key players actually operate behind the scenes, have less followers, nothing to flaunt, no fancy cars, no 5 star hotel suits, no 5 star restaurant pics and average 20 to 50 likes, but they make the most happen. They may look like the” no-body’s” but they are building their empires while others are getting high on likes/attention. Success is not what is depicted on social media. It takes hard work. Really hard work. It takes tears, sleepless nights, hunger, disappointments, heartbreak, truckloads of failure to make it in life. Achieving your dreams isn't as glamorous as it seems on social media, you will be broke, depressed and ready to quit at times but don't! its all part of the process.

It's easy to look holy in public! Social media should not be your go-to guide for relationship goals, career goals, and family goals. This pressure we put on ourselves is unhealthy. What are your goals, your dreams? Who do you aspire to be when we're not focusing on a social media celeb? It is up to you to find your own passion and calling. Where do you feel like you're being led to in life? Stop obsessing about the next person, or their next move or their social media content. Focus on you! What is your next move? You are not going to find it through social media newsfeed. No, you can only discover it from within yourself and the desires of your heart. There is a business in everyone. There is a dream in everyone. Don’t let social media steal yours or make you think you’re not worth it.

EVERYONE IS GOING THROUGH SOMETHING and that truth cannot be over emphasized. Personally, I don’t it have all together. I may look cute, easy, successful and stress-free on social media but that couldn’t be farther from the truth.  There are nights I cry myself to sleep and days I doubt my abilities. Sometimes life get so damn overwhelming and am ready to throw in the towel. Somedays am physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally worn out – scarred out of my wits of what tomorrow will bring. Most people can’t stomach what it takes for me to put food on the table, pay the bills while chasing the dream. It is not a bed of roses! Nevertheless, I stand! In the storm or sunshine – I stand through it all and I keep pushing.

Many people give up on their dreams. It isn’t easy and it never will be. For all my fellow dreamers out there, I’m out here with you fighting the same battles. Don’t give up! THE REAL POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA IS INFLUENCE AND VALUE. People with no value and no goals who only try to impress and flaunt their lifestyle. But those who have value and can influence/impact positive change in others are the real champions.

Let us use social media as a healing tool. Let’s talk about the hard things and how we handled them. Let’s talk about our struggles and not only the victories. We need to help each other and let them know they aren’t alone in their struggles. I am committed to sharing my struggles, lessons and misconceptions of everyday life to LIFT and IMPACT someone out there.

Don’t be naïve. Beyond the picture perfect and social media star-dom lies choas. Be authentic and never give up on yourself. You got this!
